Citation plaque:

Charles Holland MM

9th Field Ambulance, Australian Army Medical Corps

He has distinguished himself on several occasions during the advances along the SOMME in August and September 1918. While in charge of a stretcher squad throughout the whole of the operations, he displayed great courage and disregard of his own safety in the performance of his duty. His energy and initiative in the formation of bearer squads from enemy prisoners prevented the accumulation of wounded and greatly reduced the time of evacuation on many occasions. He worked almost continuously for twenty six days, being for the whole of this period in the forward area, and exposed daily to shell and machine gun fire.
