Description / Background

This listing relates to three timber honour rolls located in the Rock Valley Hall. The two larger rolls are for Rock Valley and District and the smaller board is for the nearby suburb of Larnook. The hall hosted farewells and fund raisers for servicemen and welcomed them home from both the First and Second World Wars, so it is a suitable community location to house these war memorials.

The First World War Roll of Honour

The First World War board is made of polished cedar. It was manufactured by Brown and Jolly, furniture makers of Lismore. Throughout the Great War, they constructed numerous timber rolls, which can be found in various buildings across the North Coast of NSW, including schools, churches, and community halls.

The board has a distinctive carved pediment, featuring the First Commonwealth Coat of Arms, the Union Jack and Australian flags, and wattle branches. It has timber shelves at the top and bottom, with carved columns on each side. The whole is housed in timber display case, with a glass door.

The roll was unveiled at the hall on 12 September 1917 in front of a large crowd. The ceremony was described in detail in the Northern Star on 15 September. Attendees included local government officials and parents of enlistees. Following lunch, Chairman Mr Peter McKenzie opened the proceedings by calling on Mrs Hughes to perform the unveiling. At the time, Mrs Hughes still had three sons serving overseas.

The Second World War Roll of Honour

The Second World War board is also made of polished cedar. It is in the form of a cabinet, with the list of names visible through the glass of the door. There are 50 names printed in gold lettering, across two columns.

Larnook On Active Service roll

This honour roll is a small timber board, listing the names of nine veterans on active service during the Second World War.
