Description / Background

The monument consists of a cupola, with four supporting sandstone lions, on top of an arched sandstone structure. Enclosed within the centre of the structure is a bronze figure of an Australian soldier with rifle at the ready. Four columns are positioned on the outside of the structure to complete the classical centre section. The whole rests on a base of grey granite blocks.

A number of plaques are affixed to the base structure, including an honour roll for the South African (Boer) War. Additional names were added to the memorial in the 1960s, including Lieut Peter Handcock, executed by order of a British Court Martial. Along with Harry 'Breaker' Morant, he was convicted of shooting Boer Prisoners. The whole unfortunate saga was popularised in the 1979 film 'Breaker Morant', largely inspired by the release of Kit Denton's 1973 book, The Breaker. Various original letters and 'relics' from the period are in the Mitchell Collection, State Library of New South Wales.

The memorial is located on Kings Parade, the parkland bounded by William, George, Church and Russell Streets. Other memorials are present within the park, including the impressive memorial carillon.
