Description / Background

A granite memorial with marble name plaques, surmounted by the remnants of a machine gun. Ornately decorated, it features a coloured depicition of the Australian and Union Jack flags combined with a laurel wreath inlay.

Additional information from Sydney Trains

A fine terrazzo pillar monument with a German machine gun on top. It is positioned on three terrazzo steps, with the names of Breeza district veterans who were killed in action or died of wounds during the First World War inscribed within a shield on the front face. The shield is surrounded by decorations of a wreath and crossed Union Jack and Australian flags. On the base of the memorial are marble tablets inscribed with the names of Breeza district veterans who served in the First and Second World Wars and Vietnam.

It was produced by renowned Narrabri mason M.W. Hardy (1867–1950) and unveiled at Breeza Station (Narrabri Courier, 2 December 1923). Hardy constructed several other rolls including the Narrabri District School 1914-1919 Roll of Honour, Duri First World War Honor Roll and Edgeroi First World War Roll of Honour. He was a freemason and his memorials feature a distinctive "Masonic" style, with the use of white marble and delicate black inlay linework, black and white checked floors, columns supporting architectural pediments, crossed flags, scrolls, banners and military insignia.

The monument was originally at Breeza Railway Station, but after the station was completely demolished, the monument was relocated to a site near the former station and wheat silos. It is visible from the Kamileroi Highway and can be reached via a local side road at Lot 7003 DP 755477.
