Description / Background

The memorial garden is circular. The sandstone pavement is accessed by two steps. Inset into the base is a bronze plaque. This is surrounded by a low, rough hewn, sandstone, dry wall extending from the edges of the steps. The back half of the wall is filled with soil and plants.

There are two bronze plaques on plinths of the same stone positioned opposite each other at the ends of the planted section. One plaque commemorates the Army occupation of the Burnside Homes during the Second World War. The other plaque is an Honour Roll. The roll lists the names the boys were known by at Burnside and are not necessarily the names under which they were enlisted. Refer Veterans list below.

The memorial garden was designed and its erection supervised by Mr. Cobden Parkes, Government architect and the son of Sir Henry Parkes. The Governor General, The Duke of Gloucester, unveiled the plaque commemorating the occupation of the Burnside Homes by the Army, on 18 September 1946. The NSW State Governor, Lieutenant-General Northcott, unveiled the Honour Roll on 7 June 1947.
