Description / Background

The memorial is a First World War roll of honor, for the ex-students of Dudley Public School. It is a pressed copper sheet, attached to a timber backing board. The names are engraved on individual copper name plates, which have been screwed to the sheet, in the centre of the board.

On the left side of the sheet is the year '1914', below which is a depiction of two crossed swords. Under the swords is a cannon, with the muzzle pointing towards the ground. On the right-hand side is the year '1918', with the same imagery. Between the swords and cannon are the names. Above the names on the left is the Union Jack and on the right is the Australian flag. At the bottom of the names is a crest.

Hanging directly below the roll is a wrist watch, displayed in a glass-fronted timber box. The watch was worn by Clarence Jeffries, an ex-student of the school who was killed in action during the war. His name appears on this roll of honor. A metal plaque is attached to the top of the box, bearing an inscription. The watch has a separate dial for the seconds. Jeffries is also commemorated through the Jeffries and Currey Memorial Library and the Currey-Jeffries Memorial Mural.

The roll is located in the foyer of the Dudley Public School Library, next to the Dudley Public School Second World War Roll of Honour.
