Description / Background

Sandstone cenotaph with black marble gilt name plates, set within a rock garden with flagstaff. The memorial is located at the intersection of Coronation Parade and Liverpool Road, Enfield. A classic 105mm Howitzer gun, donated by the French government in recognition of Australia’s wartime assistance during the First World War, sits proudly atop the memorial. Unlike many of it contemporaries, its wooden wheels have survived, and with the modern preservation techniques adopted by the local Council, should remain onsite for many years to come.

Note: This memorial lists the name of Corporal George Julian 'Snowy' Howell, VC, MM. His Victoria Cross (VC) was awarded for action at Bullecourt, France while serving with 1 Battalion, 1 Brigade, 1 Division Australian Imperial Force as a Corporal. He had previously been awarded a Military Medal (MM) for courage and devotion to duty while leading a rifle bombing section during the battalion's capture of the village of Dernicourt.
