Description / Background

This war memorial chapel is dedicated to Squadron Leader Gordon Gladstone Wood, who was the first Australian Methodist chaplain to be lost in the Second World War. He was a familiar figure at Overseas Headquarters, London, and was well known in Royal Australian Air Force Squadrons and in the Royal Air Force Units to which Australian servicemen were attached (The Methodist (Sydney), 1 July 1944).

The chapel was constructed in 1945 inside the Wesley Church in Wellington, now known as the Wellington Uniting Church. A dedication ceremony was held on site on 8 April, at which Mrs Wood unveiled a tablet naming the chapel (Wellington Times, 9 April 1945).
