Description / Background

These three timber honour boards are from the former Gordon Public School War Memorial Library. They are now located in the archives section of Ku-ring-gai Library, surrounded by other military memorabilia.

First World War honour roll

The first honour roll is for ex-pupils of the school who served in the First World War. It is decorated at the top with paintings of the Rising Sun emblem of the Australian Imperial Force and four national flags. The names of more than 180 veterans are printed in gold across three columns on the main body of the board.

This may be the second version of this roll. On 4 June 1917, The Daily Telegraph reported on the unveiling of a roll at the school, which had 155 names on it. As there are considerably more names on the current roll, which are in alphabetical order, and the end year of the war is printed on the board as 1919, it seems likely this roll was completed after the war.

Second World War and Korean War honour roll

The second and third boards are for those who served in the Second World War and the Korean War. Veterans with surnames starting A-Ki are listed on one board and those with surnames starting Kn-W are on the other board.

Both boards are simple timber panels, with no illustrations or ornamentation. They are both edged with plain timber moulding.
