Description / Background

The Greghamstown District and School First World War Roll of Honor is a polished oak board. The roll's pediment is edged with decorative timber moulding and features a painting of a laurel wreath.

Printed in gold on the main body of the board are the names of 21 veterans who served in the war. The list is divided into two columns, with those coming from the district on the left and the Greghamstown School on the right. The names panel is set behind a hinged glass pane. Also, behind the glass is a First World War Seventh War Loan Honor Flag certificate, signed by the then Commonwealth Government Treasurer, and a Second World War Victory Loan Pennant dated September-October 1944.

The memorial was constructed by Mr Gartrell. It was unveiled at the school on 20 October 1916. The ceremony was reported in the Leader shortly after on 27 October. Archdeacon Howell performed the dedication of the roll and presided over the programme, in which a number of local residents also took part. The newspaper report also published the names on the roll.

The Greghamstown School was opened as a Provisional School in August 1871 and closed as a Public School in December 1947. The memorial is now found in the Millthorpe Museum (also known as the Golden Memories Museum). It is available for viewing when the museum is open.
