Description / Background

The memorial is a Lone Pine, planted in Victoria Park in Inverell. It was grown in Australia from seeds collected from cones sent from Lone Pine in Gallipoli. The tree is accompanied by a concrete seat, with a plaque attached.

The plaque references the origins of the trees in Australia. In January 1930, Mrs G.T. McMullen wrote to the Inverell Municipal Council offering to give them a tree she had grown from seeds that had been sent to her from Gallipoli. In reply, she was asked to send the tree to Inverell, where it was planted in the park and thrived.

This original tree was felled in 2007, due to safety concerns. The current tree was planted in its place. Some of the timber from the felled tree was used for two war memorials, which are listed separately on the NSW War Memorials Register as the Inverell R.S.M. Club First World War Memorial Sculpture and the Inverell R.S.M. Club Lone Pine Story Board.

More information about the history of the Lone Pine can be found on the Australian War Memorial's website.
