Description / Background

The memorial is a polished timber honour roll dedicated to past students from the Llandilo Public School who enlisted in the First World War. The board features a Norman shaped pediment, supporting shelves at the top and bottom, with carved columns framing each side. A decorative carved laurel wreath is situated in the centre of the pediment encircling the dedication written in gold. The names, rank and fate of 17 veterans are listed in gold lettering in a single column in the centre of the honour roll.

The honour roll was created and installed in line with the 1917 Department of Education instruction to schools to create memorials. It was unveiled at Llandilo Public School on 26 May 1917. A large crowd attended the ceremony, which was presided over by the school teacher, Mr F J Fitzpatrick. Attendees included the Mayor of Castlereagh, Alderman Shields, and the former Rector of the Parish, Reverend Harry R A Wilson, who gave an eloquent address. The honour roll was unveiled by Mr Brinsley Hall, ex-MLA (Nepean Times (Penrith), 2 June 1917).

The honour roll is available for viewing when the school museum is open to the public.
