Description / Background

This war memorial consists of a set of sandstone pillars and a stone wall, each bearing a marble honour roll. It is located outside the entrance to the Millfield Public School in Millfield, NSW, 50 metres north of Wollombi Creek North Arm Bridge.

The pillars were installed in 1921, as part of a set of memorial gates, in honour of those who served in the First World War. They were unveiled on 19 March 1921 and the event was described in the Cessnock Eagle and South Maitland Recorder on 24 March. The article said:

The Roll of Honor consists of two massive Ravensfield free stone piers, with marble tablets and five gates. The whole comprises a handsome piece of designery and was the work of Messers. T. Brown and Son, West Maitland.

The wall to the left of the gates was installed at a later date, which is unknown. Originally made of brick, it has been refurbished with a sandstone-like cladding. The honour roll on the wall lists those who served in the Second World War and Vietnam. It also idenifies servicewomen from the Women's Auxiliary Air Force (W.A.A.F.).
