Description / Background

The memorial is a large timber roll of honour for the First World War. Originally commemorating 205 veterans, the roll now contains 232 names.

Mr John Brooks, of the Narrabri Historical Society, supplied the following information about the history of this memorial to Narrabri West Public School:

The late Norman Haley informed Mr Brooks the original roll was created from old timber memorial plaques that were stored under the Narrabri Town Hall stage, while awaiting repairs. It was destroyed in a flood in 1959. Newspaper reports have confirmed this. Mr Brooks is of the opinion this roll is the new roll made for the Town Hall in 1959, and then transferred to the Narrabri RSL Club House in 1971, following the demolition of the Town Hall.

It is believed the original roll was dedicated on or around 13 September 1930.
