Description / Background

The memorial is a marble honour roll. It is located in the Drama Theatre, formerly the Assembly Hall, of Callaghan College, Waratah Technology Campus, originally known as Newcastle Boys High. The roll was to relocated from the previous site in Tyrrell Street, Newcastle in 1934, when Newcastle Boys High School was opened at Waratah.

From The Novocastrian, Volume 12, No. 1, September 1922:

The Roll of Honour is of the Ionic order in design. The plinth is of white Carara marble, as are the bases and capitals of the columns. The fluted shafts of the columns are polished Australian Spring Hill marble.

The entablature, frieze and cornice are Carara marble with a highly polished surface. On the pediment, richly carved, is the monogram of the school set in a laurel wreath.

The panel bearing the names is 4 ft by 2 ft 6 in [1220 mm x 763 mm] and the overall size is 5 ft 4 in by 5 ft 7 in [1635 mm x 1703 mm].

The memorial is the work of Messrs. Meldrum and Markey, with the co-operation of Mr Scoular, and in its technical excellence and artistic effect is a work of which the school may well be proud.

The memorial was unveiled on Anzac Day 1922 in the Assembly Hall of Newcastle High School, Tyrrell Street Newcastle in the presence of Mr C.R. Smith the first headmaster of the school and Mr and Mrs Jeffries, parents of Clarence Jeffries VC. It commemorates 90 former pupils of the school who enlisted during World War I.

Access to the memorial is by arrangement during school hours.
