Description / Background

A large stone cenotaph mounted on three wide stone steps, is located at the top of Walker Street in St Leonards Park. An ornate brass lamp is located on each of the four corners of the bottom step and a hedge of rosemary is at the perimeter on the eastern and western sides. Two tall flagstaffs flank the memorial on the same sides. Large bronze laurel wreaths are also attached to the northern and southern faces of the memorial as part of the inscriptions.

The memorial was originally intended to honour veterans of the Great War but has been added to subsequently. Inscriptions and veterans' names are cast in bronze.

Notes on veterans names:

  • *Sister-M-Hobbes-F----Died at sea-World War 1. The Austalian War Memorial records this veteran as Sr N Hobbes.

Northern face, bronze lettering

Greater love hath no man than this that he give his life for the life of his country. Lest we forget.

Southern face, bronze lettering

In memory of the glorious dead who fell in the Great Wars. 1914 to 1919. 1939 to 1945. Lest we forget.

Southern face plaque

Dedicated to those who died in the following campaigns -

Sudan 1885, South Africa 1899-1902, China 1900-1901, Korea 1950-1953, Malaya 1948-1960, Malay Peninsula 1964-1966, Sabah-Sarawak 1962-1966, Vietnam 1972-1972.

[no veterans' names are recorded for the above campaigns].

This stone was laid by His Excellency the Right Honorable Henry William Baron Forster of Lepe PC, GCMG, Governor General of Australia on 24th January 1924.
