Description / Background

The Oatley War Memorial has been completely refurbished over a two year period by Kogarah Council in conjunction with Oatley RSL Sub Branch. These works have given the Memorial a completely new look with the south wall and the surrounds being cement rendered and painted.

The Memorial consists of several elements:

  • A column made of two stones sitting on a cement rendered base:
    • The upper stone has marble plaques on either side dedicated to the veterans' of the First World War, while the lower block has a plaque on either side.
    • The plaques for the First World War are inscribed with the words 'Their lives for victory' and at the base after a list of names are the words 'And their name liveth for evermore'.
    • The eastern side commemorates those from the Second World War and the base section on the eastern side also has a plaque.
    • The western side commemorates those from Korea, Malaya and Vietnam.
    • The southern wall is faced by large black marble slabs on both sides, decorated with the following:
      • On the eastern side in large gold lettering are the words 'Lest we forget'. Underneath are the service crests of the Navy, Army, Airforce, Merchant Navy and the RSL. All of these are blasted into the marble and filled with gold.
      • On the western side in large gold lettering are the words 'Lest we forget' and a large gold cross.
      • To the north is a mounted 25 Pounder, a Propeller and an Anchor.

The memorial is surrounded by gardens which complement the refurbishment. On the garden wall approaching the Memorial, the original dedication plaque has been re-affixed. The names have all been researched and authenticated but the research will continue as more names are put forward by the public.
