Meritorious Service Medal

'For conspicuous and continuous good work and devotion to duty during the period 16th/17th September, 1918, to 11th November, 1918. C.S.M. BATES' work for the whole period has been worthy of the highest commendation. When a Section Corporal he took a keen interest in his section, which was always most efficient, and the welfare of his men and horses was always his first thought. Laterly, owing to so many N.C.O.s proceeding to Australia on furlough he was promoted to rank of Temporary C.S.M. and this capacity as always, his work has been of the very highest standard.'
