Description / Background

Shoalhaven Heads Memorial Park contains several memorials, commemorating conflicts in which Australia has been involved. There is a descendant pine from the original 'Lone Pine' of Gallipoli, commemorating the First World War. A flagstaff with accompanying sandstone plinth bears a dedication to all servicepeople who gave their lives in all conflicts and another stone monument bearing plaques dedicated to National Service.

National Service monument plaque

This memorial is dedicated to all those National

Servicemen and reservist men and women who have served

Australia at home and overseas on active service

Between 1951 and 1972 over 290 000 men were conscripted

as national servicemen.

In the period 1964 - 1972, 63735 men were conscripted for 2 years

in Vietnam 18000 men served with great distinction, and of

their number 143 were killed in action. 28 died of wounds.

1 Missing in action and 880 were wounded.

They served in all corps and without doubt performed admirably

since the Australian Defense Force Reserves were re-activated.

In 1948 as citizen forces over 1250000 men and women have

served in the NAVY, ARMY and Air Force Services.

They have served all over Australia and in many locations

overseas. It is only in recent times that Governments have

sent formed units overseas on active service but individuals

have volunteered for service in various conflicts and

many UN Peace Keeping operations.
