Description / Background

This marble memorial plaque in the shape of a hand holding a scroll commemorates Driver Carl Richmond Hansen of the 11th Australian Field Artillery Brigade who died of wounds on 26 February 1917 in France. The memorial was once located in the former St Alban's Anglican Church which was consecreated on 17 December 1961. Closed in 2010, it re-opened as the Woodburn Op-Shop in August 2010 in order to raise funds for the parish.

Carl Richmond Hansen was born at South Woodburn on the Richmond River and enlisted as a single labourer of Brisbane, Queensland in the 2nd Light Horse Regiment on 28 September 1915. His unit embarked from Queensland on board the HMAT A62 Wandilla on 31 January 1916. As a driver in the 11th Field Artillery Brigade he died at Ginchy, France and was buried in the Guard's Cemetery at Lesboeufs in France. Once news was received of his death, a memorial service was held in the Woodburn Church of England Church on Sunday 1 April 1917.
