Description / Background

The simply designed timber honour roll is made of polished silky oak. At the top is a clasically designed pediment. The names and inscription are painted in gold.

The roll was made by Bell and Fraser, who were based in the industrial suburb of Rozelle near Sydney. This firm also advertised the sale of furniture kits at the time of the First World War.

The memorial was unveiled in the Presbyterian Church at Karangi on 5 July 1917. More than 150 people attended the function from a variety of denominations. The roll was presented to the church by Mr and Mrs J. Cochrane of 'Strathelyde', Karangi. The Reverend Mr D.F. Thomas acted as chairman for the ceremony and returned soldier Mr Kemp unveiled the board. Invalided during the war, he was the son of Engineer Kemp of the Coffs Harbour breakwater. Two days later The Daily Examiner (Grafton) published a detailed report of the occasion.

The roll has since moved to the Coffs Harbour Regional Museum. The museum houses a number of district war memorials and research on the various soldiers listed on the honour rolls. Access to the memorial is restricted to the opening hours of the museum.
