Description / Background

The memorial is a timber garden bench with a plaque attached. The plaque is inscribed with a dedication to Lieutenant Michael Kenneth Housden Fussell who was killed in Afghanistan on 27 November 2008, aged 25 years. It is located in the north-eastern corner of Walcha Anzac Memorial Park, near the Walcha and District War Memorial. It is positioned next to a similar memorial bench for Sgt. Andrew Russell

The memorial was designed by Walcha Shire Council, the Royal Australian Engineers and the Walcha Lions Club.

Lieutenant Fussell was born at Coffs Harbour in November 1983. He enlisted in the Australian Army in January 2002. He attended the Royal Military College, Duntroon and served in Timor (2006-2007) and Afghanistan (2008).
