Description / Background

The Naradhan Second World War Honour Roll is a timber shield, mounted on a timber backing board. The roll lists the names of 24 local veterans who served in the war. The names are inscribed on three silver plated panels, which are attached vertically to the shield. The servicewomen are grouped together on the third panel, under the heading 'Womens Services'.

Only one veteran is marked with a cross, indicating he died during the war. He is listed as H.V. Hawkins and is possibly Private Harold Vivian Hawkins, service number NX36378, who was a resident of nearby Gubbatta (The West Wyalong Advocate, 30 January 1941). He died of wounds in Egypt on 24 October 1942.

The board features several decorative elements, which are also silver plated. At the top of the board, is a laurel wreath. It is flanked by two scrolls, which have the start and end years of the war set within them. At the bottom of the board, is an emblem representing the three branches of the Australian Defence Force. It consists of an anchor, overlaid with wings and the Rising Sun badge, and finished with two crossed rifles.

The roll was organised by the Naradhan RSL and was made/designed by Angus & Coote. A donation of ₤24 was received from the Naradhan Patriotic and Comforts Fund in 1946, to assist with the purchase (The West Wyalong Advocate, 27 June 1946; 17 October 1946).

The memorial was originally located in the Naradhan RSL Hall; however, as this hall is no longer used, the roll was moved to the Naradhan Public Hall. This hall is used more regularly and allows for better public access.

In 2020, the Naradhan Reserve Land Manager received a Community War Memorials Grant from the NSW Government to restore the roll. Image 1 above shows the roll following its restoration, compared to image 2, which shows it in need of repair.  The work was carried out by Karen Coote of Antiquities Conservation Pty Ltd, Rozelle, Sydney.

The memorial is available to view by appointment or tour.
