Description / Background

The honor roll is made of pressed embossed copper and it lists 44 residents from the area who signed up for the First World War. Eight of the veterans listed on the memorial died in active service, and 14 are unable to be identified on the Australian Imperial Force database or on the National Archives of Australia.

The memorial is most likely the roll for those who served from Pitstone, near Young NSW, referred to in this article dated August 1923. Pitstone is approximately 8-10km south east of Young, in the vicinity of Laming Flat, Chinese Gardens, Chainman’s Dam and Sawpit Gully. It was a Chinese gold mining area during the gold rush days. Sawpit Gully was previously named Back Creek.

The roll can be found in the Lambing Flat Museum in Young, along with many other old memorial boards from the area.

Notes on veterans' names:

  • A newspaper notice from 26 April 1923 gives one teacher's name as E S Sinclair. This could be a match for S E Sinclair, as his service records state he was a teacher at Pitstone.
  • On the roll veteran Mr Raynor is listed as killed in action, however unable to identify a match on the Roll of Honour and Embarkation Rolls at the Australian War Memorial.
