2020 marks 75 years since the end of the Second World War. To commemorate this important year, the NSW Government interviewed WWII veterans about their experiences. Read our 75th Anniversary Stories.
This memorial is one of two timber honour rolls for the First World War displayed inside the Yetman Memorial Hall. It is a horizontal board with carved linear details, giving it an art deco appearance. The other Yetman First World War Roll of Honour is a vertical board with a triangular pediment and carved columns on the left and right sides.
Both rolls include the same names, but they are presented in different ways. The first roll lists the names in the order of first initial followed by surname (e.g. L Andrews), whereas this roll is listed in the order of surname followed by initials (e.g. Andrews L). On both boards, the same five veterans are marked as killed in action.
There are also slight differences in the inscriptions. This roll uses the term 'Roll of Honour' while the second uses 'Honor Roll'; the years are also marked as 1914–1919 and 1914–1918 respectively. The inscriptions and names on both are painted in gold.
It is possible that this roll was unveiled on 5 July 1947, alongside a roll for the Second World War. On 14 July, the Warialda Standard and Northern Districts' Advertiser reported on a well-attended ceremony at the hall and refers to the "1914–1918" war, which matches the inscription on the board.
From an article in the Warialda Standard and Northern Districts' Advertiser published on 9 September 1918, it is known one of the two was established circa 1918 and was originally located in the Yetman School; at the time of publication, the roll was reported to have 36 names, with more to be added upon the individual's enlistment. Instead of this one, it is likelier for the aforementioned memorial to be the first roll due to its more traditional pediment design. It was likely relocated from the school to the hall as noted in the below excerpt from Yetman, Yesterday and Today, published by the Yetman Bicentennial Committee in 1988:
Prior to World War II Anzac Day Services were held at the school with Mrs McPherson unveiling the Honour Roll. She had donated the Honour Roll to the school and also to St Andrews C of E Church in memory of her son who was killed at Gallipoli in 1915 … Honour Roll [were] also placed in the Memorial Hall after it was completed in 1935.
Access to the memorials is restricted to the opening hours of the hall.
