Embroidered panels (3) listing the names of staff and students who enlisted whilst attending the Sydney Training (Teachers) College during WWI. Framed behind glass.
The Roll of Honour was designed by Mr John Christie Wright, a lecturer in art at the College. By the war’s end it comprised three linen panels on which the names of military volunteers were embroidered in dark blue silk (the College colour) with, at the top of each panel, a pair of wreaths and at the foot the College coat of arms. The embroidered names were created by female students and staff in the art department. Sadly Mr Wright, who enlisted in 1915, was killed in action in 1917 and never saw the result of his initiative.
The linen panels were framed behind glass for the unveiling in 1921 by the Minister for Agriculture and the Roll of Honour was hung in the College library. It was relocated to the foyer of the Sydney Teachers College building within the University of Sydney where it hung for 30 years in direct sunlight. It was removed a few years ago during renovations and is now in museum storage.
