Description / Background

The Maroubra RSL Sub-Branch Cenotaph consists of a curved brick and concrete memorial wall which has a series of 288 brass name plaques mounted onto it. These plaques are in memory of deceased service personnel who were members of the Maroubra RSL sub-branch. The area directly in front of the wall has a flagpole with yardarm and a sandstone plinth standing next to it. The plinth has a granite plaque on the front with the inscription "This Memorial is Dedicated to Those Who Made the Supreme Sacrifice in the Service of Their Country - LEST WE FORGET" with the emblems of the three services, Australian Army, Royal Australian Navy and Royal Australian Airforce beneath it. The sides of the cenotaph feature the emblems of the Merchant Navy and the Australian Women's Service. The cenotaph was rededicated on 15 December 1995 to the Maroubra RSL sub-Branch and was officially unveiled by the Mayor of Randwick City Council, C. Bastic.

Included in close proximity to the cenotaph is a statue depicting a First World War soldier entitled “At Ease” mounted on top of a black stone plinth. This statue is believed to have been erected to commemorate the centenary of the Armistice that ended the First World War in 2018. Two stone pillars with plaques on top which are located at the entrance to the path leading up to the cenotaph. There is an artillery gun and a ships anchor located on the southern side of the cenotaph. There are two park benches, one on the north side and one on the south side of the cenotaph. The benches are painted black and have the inscription “MAROUBRA RSL SUB BRANCH” pressed into them. Also pressed into the metal are the three Australian Defence Force service emblems (Australian Army, Royal Australian Airforce and Royal Australian Navy) and the words “LEST WE FORGET”. The arms of the benches have red poppies pressed into them.

Located on the western side of the cenotaph site is a memorial wall and flagpole established to commemorate the combined Australian and American naval service during the Battle of the Coral Sea in May 1942. The memorial was dedicated to the Randwick Council for use in the Coral Sea Park by Admiral H.C. Hopwood, United States Navy (USN) on 6 May 1960. The memorial wall was relocated from the Coral Sea Park to the site of the Maroubra RSL sub-branch cenotaph by Mayor C. Bastic on 15 December 1995.
