Description / Background

This war memorial is a marble honour roll with black lettering, which lists employees of Grafton-based furniture company H.H. Sanders who served in the First World War. The roll is decorated with two crossed swords at the top.

The Grafton Argus and Clarence River General Advertiser, 27 December 1918, reported that Messrs H.H. Sanders had mounted the roll on their Prince Street shop frontage on 24 December. Their well-known business has been established in 1862 and specialised in furniture manufacture. The article listed the names of the shop's employees and a further account was published in the Daily Examiner, 26 December 1918.

The roll was moved once the business closed. It is now available for viewing when the Schaeffer Museum, conducted by the Clarence Historical Society, is open to the public.
