Description / Background

The Wentworth Military Museum is a public museum, which presents the history of more than 125 years of Australian military service, complimented by international military memorabilia. A 'Wall of Memory' display inside the museum focuses on the First World War.

The museum also houses the original flags flown at the Australian Headquarters in Vung Tu, Vietnam by the 1 ALSG 1st Australian Logistic Support Group. The pair of flags is known as the Horses Head and the Horses Tail.

The museum aims to create a context in which visitors can explore their own own experience, and to share stories and experiences relating to service and sacrifice to our nation.

Outside the museum stands the Wentworth Peace Memorial. It is polished black granite monument, featuring a colour etching of the Australian National Flag, which is depicted draped over the stone. The flag encompasses all who have served, fought and sacrificed for Australia. Positioned below the flag are colour etchings of three red poppies, to represent past, present and future sacrifices. A 'Prayer of Peace' is etched in the centre of the stone. The reflective surface of the memorial stone allows a child standing in front of it to see their own reflection through the inscription.

The museum was dedicated by the Wentworth and District RSL sub-Branch and Wentworth Services Club in 2011. The Peace Memorial was erected on 11 March 2021.

Wentworth Peace Memorial

May we who maketh wars to cease unto the ends of the earth

who breaketh the bow and cutteth the spear asunder

and who burneth the chariot in fire

grant unto the people of our time and unto all generations to come

a lasting peace built upon fraternal goodwill

May he grant unto the nations such love of peace

that they shall unceasingly strive for that consummation

when all peoples will dwell in unity and brotherhood.

Grant us thy peace O God of peace and love.
