Description / Background

The Maryvale School and District First World War Honor Board is inscribed with the names of 46 men who served in the war. An attractive and well-executed piece, the physical characteristics of the roll were described in The Dubbo Liberal and Macquarie Advocate on 11 May 1917:

The Maryvale Honor Board is a credit to the makers, Murray Bros., of Wellington. It is made of New Zealand maple, and stands six feet high. [T]he panel upon which the names are inscribed being 4ft. by 28in. On either side it has two [fluted] columns, beautifully set in, with two small shelves (one above and one below), being set off on top with an ornamental head. The names are written in gold leaf, which is the work of Mr Cooey, also of Wellington, and is an excellent specimen of the signwriter's art.

The board was unveiled during a special concert at the school on the evening of 2 May 1917, organised by the Maryvale Reception and Returned SolFix this textdiers' Association. The event was a great success and details were reported in the Wellington Times on 11 May. The room was decorated with bunting and photographs of the soldiers had been hung on the walls. There were refreshments, music, and singing to entertain the crowd and Mr E. Campling, Inspector of Schools, performed the unveiling. At the time, the roll included only 42 names.

The Maryvale Public School opened in March 1879 and closed in December 1970. The roll is now located in the Wellington Museum, where is available for viewing during opening hours.
