Description / Background

The memorial is a large timber roll of service. It has a classical pediment at the top and on each side are two carved columns. The timber is polished and stained. The gilded names are listed in two columns in the centre of the board. Alongside the memorial is a label detailing the history of the roll.

Lennox Head School was opened in January 1882 and was known as North Creek until December 1961. Once a decision was made to establish the memorial, the honour roll committee set about fundraising. In May and June 1917, euchre parties and socials were held in Meaney's Hall. Dances were also held with raffles.

In May 1918, secretary of the committee R. Gibbon invited the President, Councillors and officers of the Tintenbar Shire to the unveiling of the roll (Northern Star, 17 May 1918). The ceremony took place on 5 June with the Minister for Local Government, the Hon. J.D. Fitzgerald, performing the unveiling.

On 3 September 2020, the Principal of the Lennox Head Public School stated in the school's centenary booklet, that it had been recorded Robert Gibbon of the North Creek Debating Club led the campaign to have the roll erected in the school.

When the North Creek School was moved to Lennox Head, the roll moved with the school. It has since been relocated to the Lennox Head Cultural and Community Centre. Access to the memorial is by appointment/tour.

Lennox Head Public School 1881-1982

In late 1958 it was decided to move the North Creek Public School to Lennox Head. The Honour Board moved with the school. From [t]hen until 1995 the Roll of Service was housed at the Lennox Head Public School.

As part of Australia Remembers 1945-95 it was agreed that this significant heritage item would be more accessible to the community by being placed in the new branch library of the Shire of Ballina.

At the official opening of the Lennox Head Library on Friday 25 August 1995 school principal Robyn McIntyre officially handed over the Roll of Service to the Richmond Tweed Regional Librarian, [t]hen Margaret Henderson whose family is represented among those named.
