Description / Background

This war memorial is a stately timber honour roll for the Second World War. It features a carved pediment at the top, a timber ledge at the bottom, and two carved columns.

The roll lists the names of 15 members of the Wellington Apex Club who served in the war. Their names are printed neatly in gold in the centre of the board, between the columns.

The roll was donated by Mr Elsworth Wall and Mr Harry Ling, office holders within the club. Their names are inscribed on a small metal plaque, attached to the ledge. They commissioned the piece from Murray Bros., a furniture manufacturing company in Wellington.

The unveiling ceremony took place at the Central Hotel on 11 September 1941, during the annual meeting of the club. The evening was described in detail in the Wellington Times on 15 September. The Mayor of Wellington, Dr V. W. Savage, unveiled the roll.

The memorial is now located in the Wellington Museum, where is available for viewing during opening hours.
