Raymond George Castles was born on 29 July 1932 at Crows Nest, NSW, to Joseph and Jeanette Castles. He enlisted in the Royal Australian Infantry Corps on 7 April 1952, and served in the Korean War with his unit the 1st Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment. After completing 352 days in service, he was discharged from the Army on 24 March 1953.

Raymond married Valda Jewel Walker in 1957, and they had two children. Valda and Raymond lived in Macquarie Fields, Sydney. Raymond died on 9 July 1997 at age 64. He has a memorial plaque at the Ingleburn RSL Memorial, and at the Sydney War Cemetery in Rookwood. Valda died in May 1997, at the age of 77.
