Was selected in the Light Horse due to his famed and exceptional riding ability – no horse had ever thrown him.
He grew up at the Elm Copse, near the current spillway and was an exceptional sportsman in rugby, rules & cricket etc.

He soldier-selected land at Upper Towong (Biggara) after the War, and then bought 'Braeside' at Kiels Lane in the mid '20s, now owned by his son Hume.
Had 3 sons (Murray, Hume and Glen), & 4 girls (Vera Bailey, Melinda Butler, Roma Hamilton & Lois Jephcott).
