'Near Peronne, during operations, from 30th August to 5th September 1918, he displayed conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in getting an infantry foot-bridge across the Somme Valley, in face of the enemy, under heavy artillery and machine gun fire. He conducted reconnaissances 500 yards ahead of our lines by night and by day, and was indefatigable in his efforts to bring his task to a successful conclusion.'
