Ernest was born in 1892 in Goulburn, NSW. He was living at Islington, Newcastle when he enlisted on 18 July 1915. He was wounded in action at Fromelles on 20 July 1916, with a gunshot wound to the left shoulder, arm, and back. He returned to Australia on 3 April 1914 and discharged as medically unfit for service on 27 July 1917. He is remembered on the Rocky Hill War Memorial Tower First World War Honour Roll in Goulburn, Queanbeyan Public School Great War Roll of Honor, City of Queanbeyan Wall of Remembrance, and on the St Mark's Church of England First and Second World Wars Roll of Honour, Islington.
