Description / Background

Single story brick memorial hall, built in honour of those who served in the First World War. On the exterior front wall are two foundation stones and three white marble honour roll plaques, two for the First World War and one for the Second World War.

From 'Bendick Murrell Memorial Hall' by W.G. Elliott, ‘Barrelli’, Crowther 2803:

09 February 2001

The Bendick Murrell Memorial Hall was built following a meeting held at Bendick Murrell on Friday 12 June 1925. The following office bearers were appointed: President: J.H. Dawe; Vice Presidents: E.E. Grounds, S. Healey and E. Farnsworth; Treasurer: W.W. Sutherland; Secretary: S. Allen; Collectors: W.M. Sutherland, T.S. Sutherland, L. Warton, C. Williams, V. Elliott and Geo. Prescud.

The hall was built on a block of land purchased from Mr John Lynch. The original hall cost the equivalent of $3,600 in 1925. Additions of a supper room built following the receipt of a generous legacy from the late Vera Miller late last century at a cost of $65,000. The memorial hall became part of the Bendick Murrell recreation ground. The care of the hall is in the hands of local trustees.
