This obelisk is a seven-layer structure. From bottom to top, the layers are:

  1. Granite base 
  2. Caste iron balustrade surrounding tiled landing
  3. Base 1
  4. Base 2 decorated with two crossed swords and a slouch hat made out of bronze
  5. Inscriptions
  6. Corniche
  7. Needle/obelisk

The memorial is located in the grounds of St James Chapel. The Chapel is privately owned and maintained on the 'Belltrees' property in the Upper Hunter Valley, 35km from Scone.

Northern side

In memory of Lieut Alfred Ebsworth Belltrees Troop 1st Australian. Killed in Action at Roodeplaat near Bronkhurst Spruit, Transvaal, South Africa, 23rd July 1900, Aged 26 Years. A gallant soldier and faithful friend. Erected by his friends and comrades.
