Description / Background

Dark stained wooden honour board with gilt lettering. It was situated under the awning of platform one at Newcastle Station in a glass case. At the top, the Australian flag and Union Jack are crossed. Hanging below the main board is a wooden scroll with a verse.

The memorial was relocated from Cardiff Loco Workshops. The workshop was formerly on the main north line between Cardiff and Argenton.

Additonal notes by Sydney Trains:

A polished carved wooden Honour Roll board, with 77 Cardiff Loco Workshops railways employees names who served in the Second World War written in gilt in three columns, encased behind a glass pane. It is decorated with a crossed Union Jack and Australian flag with a crown above. Below there is a wooden scroll with the words 'Greater Love Hath No Man Than This, That A Man Lay Down His Life For His Friends'.

It was produced by Cardiff Locoworks staff, and after its closure in 1988, the board was relocated to Newcastle Station where it hung for many years on the wall of the station building. After Newcastle Station was closed in 2014, the board was relocated by Sydney Trains and put into storage at Hamilton Depot.
