Description / Background

The memorial comprises several structures developed over a period of time. The main structure, unveiled on 25 April 1966, consists of a concrete shell sheltering a central Cross of Sacrifice.

On either side stand two granite columns, commerating First World War veterans. Originally these columns were part of the memorial gate which was situated at the entrance to the park. The gate was installed in 1925.

In front is the shell is the new memorial which was unveiled in 2003 by Mr Bede Tongs MM, with Mr Keith Hall, RSL State President also present. It is a large plinth of sandstone block construction with bronze name plaques attached. These plaques list all local servicemen who served from the Boer War to the Vietnam War. Bronze service crests and lettering are attached to the front of the structure.

The new memorial was largely due to the efforts of Mr Stuart Anderson who found a suitable tribute to all those who had served in the wars was lacking. Mr Anderson, the chief researcher, was helped by members of the Crookwell Historical Society. The Crookwell Shire Council and the Crookwell RSL funded the various stuctures of the memorial.
