Description / Background

The memorial embodies a portion of the stern of HMAS Parramatta I, and includes descriptive boards which feature details of the vessels. This memorial is located on the southern bank of the Parramatta River, east of the Gasworks Bridge. The Royal Australian Navy's website contains detailed information about the history and service of these ships.

THIS MEMORIAL WAS ERECTED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PARRAMATTA IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE NAVAL HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF AUSTRALIA TO COMMEMORATE THE SERVICE OF ALL SHIPS TO BEAR THE NAME 'PARRAMATTA' IN THE ROYAL AUSTRALIAN NAVY.

THE STERN OF THE TORPEDO BOAT DESTROYER, FIRST BUILT FOR THE ROYAL AUSTRALIAN NAVY, IS EMBODIED IN THIS MEMORIAL. IT WAS THE LAST CLASS OF BRITISH WARSHIP DESIGNED WITH AN OUTBOARD RUDDER.
