Description / Background

This memorial flagpole is located in the paved area formed by the vehicular driveway in the forecourt of Junee railway station, known as Railway Square. It has curved hedges in planter boxes at each end and timber bollards around the perimeter.

The original flagpole, located 10 metres north of this location, was dedicated in 1923 and repaired in 1996. It was removed in 2001 during refurbishment of Railway Square and replaced by this flagpole.

Three small square brass plaques are set into the paving at the base of the flagpole. The first bears the memorial's dedication and the other two identify the area as sitting above an underground brick reservoir from 1883 which stored water for Junee station and a time capsule sealed in 1978 for the centenary of rail in Junee and to be opened in 2028.
