John was an English student at Sydney University and lived in Watson's Bay. He joined as a 2nd Lieutenant, then was promoted to Lieutenant in 1916 and to Captain in 1917. In 1917 he was given the military cross for 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He went forward over the open under very heavy fire, and brought back most valuable information, which enabled a difficult situation to be cleared up.' Source: 'Commonwealth Gazette' No. 169.
