Description / Background

The Nimmitabel Cenotaph is a grey granite obelisk, erected in 1921 in memory of the fallen heroes from the district who gave their lives in the First World War. The memorial is a private monument and was erected by the Nimmitabel Community, at a cost of £200 at the time. The foundation stone was laid on 5 November 1921 by Mr O. E. Silk. Plaques and polished granite tablets are attached to commemorate those who served and fell in the First and Second World Wars and the Vietnam War.

The memorial is located in a park next to the Monaro Highway also known as Bombala Street in Nimmitabel. The iron gates at the entrance of the park were erected in 1953. They depict the rising sun motif, which is the emblem of the Australian Imperial Forces.
