Cowra Breakout Site Memorial Cairn

Description

This cairn was established on the site of the Japanese breakout at the Cowra Prisoner of War camp on the 5 August 1944. The Japanese burned down most of their camp and over 350 escaped. Many Japanese committed suicide and four Australian soldiers were killed. The recapture of the prisoners took over a week.
