Description / Background

The central feature of this memorial grouping is a sandstone drinking fountain, which was established in honour of Trooper Frank Andrews who served in the South African War (Boer War). The marble dedication plaque is positioned in the centre of the structure, above the fountain's basin. Directly above this, the sandstone is decorated with relief carvings of crossed rifles and a laurel wreath. At one time, there were also shell casings on top of the memorial, but these have disappeared.

The memorial was made using local stone, by local stone mason Frederick William Rose, at a cost £40. It was originally unveiled on 2 June 1902, on the grounds of the Wollongong Town Hall. In 1984, it was moved to MacCabe Park in the Wollongong CBD, where it forms part of the MacCabe Park Memorial Complex

In more recent times, two sandstone walls have been added to the sides of the fountain, to honour Australia's participation in subsequent conflicts. Both walls have bronze plaques attached to commemorate Australians who have served.

To the right of this memorial is the Wollongong Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander War Memorial
