Description / Background

The memorial is an ornately decorated granite pillar, surmounted by a carved Crown and mounted on three steps. It is inscribed with a roll of honor for the First World War on the sides of the pillar. A roll for the Second World War was added later and unveiled on 25 April 1949. A further plaque for a veteran from the Vietnam War has also been added over time.

A public meeting was held on 10 September 1920 to consider the erection of a memorial dedicated to World War One Urunga soldiers. Designs were submitted and it was decided to select the tender of Andrew Bros. of Sydney.  The monument was 10 feet six inches tall and 7 feet six inches square. On each side are four polished granite sides with the inscription of names. The memorial was renovated and cleaned in April 1949. Four names of those who fell in World War Two were inscribed.

Notes on veterans' names:

  • On the memorial F. Morse-Kincaid and J. Morse are both recorded with the surname Kincaid. Both were the sons of Edith M. Kincaid.
  • All status codes are taken from information in the Australian War Memorial Roll of Honour, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission database, and the National Archives of Australia.
  • The Australian War Memorial also notes a Distinguished Flying Cross which was awarded to W. K. Bennett.
