Description / Background

This memorial is a simple timber honour roll for ex-pupils of Viewmont Public School who served in the First World War. The board has been cut with a curved shape at the top and bottom. It has been edged with two painted lines, one black and the other blue-grey, which highlight the shape.

The inscription and names are expertly printed in gold in the centre of the board. The five veterans who fell in the war are marked with a dagger symbol, also in gold. Below the names is a variation of the 'Greater love' quote from the Bible, which is surrounded by a decorative banner, painted in the same blue-grey colour.

Viewmont Public School was located in the Upper Nambucca Valley district. It was opened in April 1914 and was a provisional school until December 1918. It became a public school in January 1919 and closed in December 1971. The roll may have been unveiled and/or displayed at the school. It is now located at the Valla Public Hall. Access to the memorial is restricted to the opening hours of the hall.
