Description / Background

The Wyrallah Public School Second World War Memorial Gate consists of two cement pillars, supporting a metal pipe arch bearing the words 'We Remember'. The two pillars each have a dedication plaque attached. At the time of its construction, the gate also included metal gates between the pillars. The structure was also accompanied by a fence.

The memorial was designed and built by voluntary labour from the district. It was officially unveiled at the school during Empire Day celebrations on 24 May 1948, which featured speeches, songs, prayers and a sports programme. The event was reported in the Northern Star on 4 June, including a photo of the memorial. During his speech, Mr George Smith, the President of the Wyrallah Parents and Citizens' Association, described how the "grand cooperative community spirit" led to the memorial being funded and built through working bees. He also invited veterans from the First and Second World Wars to form a guard of honour in front of the memorial.

Each element of the memorial was unveiled separately. Mesdames S. Kenwood and W.L. Walker, representing mothers of those who paid the supreme sacrifice, unveiled the plaque in honour of those who fell in the Second World War. Mesdames J. Webber and C. McPherson unveiled the plaque in honour of all those who served in the war. The gate itself was officially opened by M.H.L. Anthony M.H.R.
