Description / Background

The Yamba First World War Roll of Honour is timber board, which features the names of those who served in the war inscribed on small brass plaques. It is a simply designed memorial, with a classical pediment at the top and carved columns on each side. It also has timber shelves at the top and bottom. It is unusual for brass plates to be attached to a timber honour roll. The more common method is to paint the names directly on to the timber.

The roll was unveiled at the Yamba Public School on 8 March 1918. Mr W.T. Fraser, the District Inspector of Schools, was the chair for the event and also performed the unveiling. The ceremony included patriotic songs from the children and speeches by Mr Fraser; Mr Dalby, the headmaster; and Mr Duce, a returned soldier. An article in The Grafton Argus and Clarence River General Advertiser on 13 March described the unveiling and included the names of those on the board. Two days later, the Daily Examiner reported that two names had been left off the roll; they were the two sons of Mr Makinson of Yamba. These names were added via brass plaques at a later date.

The roll is now found in the Yamba Museum and is available for viewing during opening hours.
